I have wondered for quite a while now why it is that people tend to blame Christians and/or Christianity when an individual behaves inappropriately, claiming to be Jesus or saying that God told them to do this or that?
When one reads the Gospels, one can see clearly that there is a certain way that Jesus is going to behave and how He is not going to behave. When we as a society are confronted by someone - ANYONE - who claims to be acting in God's stead, should we not check to see if their words and deeds match those of Christ? If after a quick comparative analysis shows clearly that their words and deeds are false, why do we not dismiss the individual as the fraud he or she is rather than believe that somehow Christ is to blame?
One of the more enduring and egregious examples of this in the United States is demonstrated by the Westborough Baptist Church. This group of people say that they are doing "God's work" , but a quick check of the Gospels would leave one wondering just which "god" they're working for.
When I saw this news article, my first thought was, "how could anyone be so stupid?" Then I gave it a bit more thought and realized that if we as the Church do not inform the world of the truth of Christ, then these charlatans can get away with their falsehoods unchallenged.
Such people are predators, folks; they are NOT Christians. A Christian is one who has a relationship with Christ and understands what it is that He wants of us. That is best translated into having the heart of a servant and not the heart of a master. Just a thought.
